What is an International Bank Account Number (IBAN)?

IBAN, which is the acronym for the International Bank Account Number, is a unique code which is associated with the bank account of the customer and allows both national and international money transfer. Creation of IBAN numbers is subject to ISO 13616 standards. It starts with a 2-digit country code which is followed by either numbers or alphanumeric characters depending on the country standards. The length of the IBAN also varies according to the country. This system was developed by Europe intentionally to connect banking networks around the world.

It is important to understand that IBAN is not an alternative to your bank account, it is essential to understand that IBAN is a system that provides additional information that helps in identifying overseas payments. Another important point is the IBAN is the method of verifying that transaction details are correct.

An IBAN is used for interbank transfers or wiring money from one bank to another for transactions such as cross border payments. An IBAN number might reach a maximum of 34 alphanumeric characters and consists following components:

Country code: The country code is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) country code. Every country in the world has unique IBAN codes that represent their country.

Check digits: The check digits are assigned by the issuing financial institution.

Bank identifier code: This code identifies the financial institution. (In some cases, the same code may also identify the specific branch of the financial institution.)

Basic Bank account number (BBAN): This is a code that identifies an individual account at a specific financial institution in a specific country.

For you to understand this better, here is an example: you see an IBAN number from Norway- “ NO93 8601 1117 947”. We can read this iban number as follows:

Country code Check digits Bank Identifier   Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN)

     NO                   93                     8601 11            17 947

How to Create International Bank Account Number

In general IBAN is provided by the issuing banks. However, in order to have an IBAN number the first condition is to have a bank account in the country you reside. If you plan on spending a significant time abroad, you should seriously consider opening an international bank account for your international money transfers and financial transactions. Doing this will ensure you save time and money. International bank accounts provide much more flexibility and benefits when it comes to international transactions.

If you want to open an international bank account in an offshore country, you need to do a deep research about your options. Because once you get to do that you will find out that offshore banks require proof of identity and other documents for identification in the course of account opening and might want to know the source of your deposits.

Who needs an international bank account?

Anyone spending significant time abroad either for a job, a course of study, a fellowship program, or another reason to consider opening an account in that country.

If you have an internationally operating business, also an international bank account may help you to grow your business by saving time and money. Travellers can often use their credit or debit cards anywhere in the world. But banks charge fees for international transactions.

Or let’s say you are an investor and you want to buy a house abroad or have already bought your dream summer house in another country. In that case an international bank account will ease all your transactions such as recurring payments or taxes. Again you can face high transaction fees with a local bank account.

The fees may not be more than 3% to 5% per transaction, but they’ll add up. Exchange rates in a new country’s currency can also affect the value of your money.

Withdrawing cash? You’ll also get hit with a foreign ATM fee. Not only ATM fee but also there will be conversion fees.

For the occasional international trip this isn’t a big deal. But for three months or longer in a new country, opening a local bank account or an international bank account in addition to your US bank can save you major cash.

Opening an account

If you decide to open an international bank account, there will be some steps you need to follow. In general these steps are very similar to opening a local bank account.

Specific document requirements differ from country to country.  But no matter where you are you’ll need:

Proof of Identity. Bring your passport and driver’s licence or state ID. Many banks require two forms of ID (a student ID may or may not count, but a birth certificate most likely will). You should consult this with the bank that you decide to open an international bank account with.

Proof of Residency. You may need proof of residency in the United States, proof of an address in the foreign country, or both. A recent utility bill, lease agreement or an ID with your address should work.

Deposit Funds. If you are opening your international bank with business purposes, some banks often have minimum startup funds required for deposit. These amounts should be indicated by the bank.

A student or work visa if you need one for the country.

A university letter or proof of school enrolment. These documents must be issued by the educational institution that you are registered with.

A letter of employment or employment contract. This document must be officially signed by your employer.

After collecting the required documents, make an appointment with your bank. Most of the banks require physical presence inside the bank to open an international bank account. However there are other options. If you are not able to travel to the country where you want to open a bank account, then you can choose an online digital banking platform that provides you an IBAN.

Transferring Money

The easiest way to move cash from a domestic account to an overseas one is via wire transfer or digital wallets. There are two codes being used for international transactions, and you might need one of each. In the past sending money abroad was very difficult. There were a lot of additional fees and costs. Also international transactions were always delayed. Sometimes these transactions used to take up to 15 days.

Today with the revolution of the digital financial world it is very easy to transfer money internationally. Not only online payment platforms but also traditional banks have joined this journey. However traditional banks are not able to compete with global online digital payment platforms. Online payment providers are born with the development of financial technology and they are more aligned with client solutions. Most of the online platforms are not physical entities, they only operate online and this allows users to save much more money and time when it comes to international transactions.

Jeton is a globally operating online payment platform. We are operating in more than 100 countries all over the world. With a client focused approach, Jeton aims to provide the fastest services. Opening a Jeton account will give you an international IBAN number if you prefer.

SWIFT code

There are two internationally recognized, standardized methods of identifying bank accounts when a transfer is being made from one country to another and SWIFT is one of them. The other one is IBAN. IBAN is used to identify an individual account while SWIFT is used to identify the specific bank.

The SWIFT code is a type of Bank Identifier Code (BIC) used to identify banks around the world. Your SWIFT or BIC code usually shows up on your account statements. You can also look up your code using a SWIFT code finder. SWIFT is a very popular messaging system that allows banks to share huge amounts of data during the transactions. This data includes the status of the account, debit and credit amounts, and details related to the money transfer. This makes the SWIFT a very secure network as this data can be used also for international compliance and AML purposes.

IBAN number

IBAN was first created to facilitate electronic payments between banks across the Eurozone. Since then, it has expanded worldwide, although not all banks and not all regions have joined the standard and you may still need to rely on alternative systems such as SWIFT instead. North American, Australian, and Asian countries do not use the IBAN for domestic money transfers, and will only do so when sending a payment to a country that has adopted the IBAN.
