The Story of Passion, Apostles and Ultimate Effort
Being much more than a football team, Aston Villa Football Club is a monumental tree of British Football and its spectacular history. Based in Aston, Birmingham, this traditional football club competes in the Premier League, the top tier of the English league system. Moreover, it has been ranked 5th in the all-time English top-flight table since 1888.
When football games gained popularity in the middle 1800s, various cities in Europe began to form their professional teams. However, there is a pretty interesting anecdote about Aston Villa F.C.; the football team was originally formed as a way for the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel’s cricket team to look for a solution to stay fit during the winter months. Back then, there was no local football team in either Aston or Birmingham. That’s why Aston Villa’s first match was against the local Aston Brook St Mary’s Rugby team. But how can a football team play with a rugby team? The Villa side found the mind-blowing solution. The first half would be played under Rugby rules and the second half under Association rules.
The avant-garde team won their first honour, the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1880, under Scotsman George Ramsay’s captaincy, who is considered the world’s first paid football manager. Undoubtedly, Aston Villa English club was the most successful football club of the Victorian era. It won three F.A. Cups and more than five League titles by the end of Queen Victoria’s reign(1837-1901).
Climbing the ladder of success and fame continued into the Edwardian era. Villa lifted the F.A. Cup for the fourth time and a sixth league title.
Unfortunately, the dark war times affected all English Clubs as well as European Football Teams. Beginning with the F.A. Cup on the eve of the First World War in 1913, Villa lost seven seasons to the Second World War, and a myriad of football careers came to a premature end. However, we still remember some legendary names from that time: Aston Villa’s all-time top goalscorer Billy Walker, winger Eric Houghton and the progressive coach Jimmy Hogan as manager.
The Phoenix – or The Lion of Babylon referring to the team- rose from its ashes thanks to the guidance of former player Alex Massie. After then, there would not be anything in the way of Aston Villa Football Club. Grabbing a seventh top-flight league title in 1980–81, Villa had its first top-flight title in 71 years, and the following season, beating Barcelona 3–1 crowned Villa as a European Super Cup winner. Holding the flag of unity and foreseeing, The Lions did not break the tradition of being a founding member and became the founder member of the Premier League in 1992. Today, the Premier League, also known as the English Premier League or the EPL, is the highest platform of the English football league system running from August to May.
