Norway’s Latest Cashless Move: Testing a Digital Currency
Norway, with its northern and southern lights, has been a breathtaking country to visit. Aside from its breathtaking nature, Norway has a plethora of things to offer. In today's paper, we'll go into great detail about the financial system in Norway.
Norway is a leading country in the way of being cashless. To be sure, it is referred to as the world's most cashless nation. The use of cash in Norway remains roughly %4. Now, it is more popular to use digital wallets, credit cards, and so on. In addition to these digital payment solutions, the world has been rocked by the impact of cryptocurrencies after the foundation of Bitcoin in 2009. In simple words, cryptocurrencies can be described as digital money. Despite the fact that the central bank of Norway does not support the use of Bitcoin, they are currently experimenting with a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
There has been a push for an electronic currency that would be controlled by its central bank- not unlike Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies that are not regulated by any government authority. In April 2021, the central bank of Norway, Norges Bank announced it will start testing various solutions for a central bank digital currency. Up until 2023, they will put CBDCs to the test by conducting extensive research in every area. Oystein Olsen, the governor of the Norges Bank, stated that “Central bank cash provides the payment system with a number of important attributes that may be relevant to retain and develop further by issuing a CBDC. Additional knowledge is necessary for us to be able to decide whether issuing a CBDC is appropriate”.
